Brand Profile
Sato Seni Co., Ltd. is a family-run business founded in 1932, currently run by the forth-generation owner. The prefecture of Yamagata where the company bases, was historically renowned for production of silk, common material for the traditional Japanese clothing, Kimono. When the country’s clothing culture shifted from Kimono to the Western clothing, our first-generation owner started breeding sheep to produce hand spinning yarns for hand knitting. This was the beginning of Sato Seni. Our successive owners expanded the business over time. The second-generation owner industrialized the spinning mill. The third-generation owner started production of knit wear. The current forth-generation owner has started our own knit wear brands; opened multiple types of retail stores and restaurants. Today, we operate in a wide range of fields defying the boundaries and categorization. Our strength comes from our history. From hand spinning yarns and hand knitting to the latest production method, we have a rich experience in both spinning and knit wear production. As a spinning mil, our biggest asset is “creativity never limited by convention”. Our current owner often asks the customer: “Everyone believes that the lower micron wool is softer and better, but is that really true?” The quality of animal fibers differs greatly depending on the environment surrounding animals. Some fibers may be hard while others are soft. Some fibers may be shiny while others are not. Or some fibers may be thick while others are fine. Just like human hair is diverse in terms of color and texture, each animal fibers has unique characteristics. And we believe it is impossible to make a simple judgement of which is better than the other. The soft wool may be suitable for high gauge sweaters close to skin, but it is too heavy and has too much of draping quality for outer wears in low gauge. On the other hand, the hard wool is perfect for outer wears thanks to its light weight and bulkiness. However it is not a great idea to wear them directly on the skin. Each production regions of wool and each material of different micron has its own characteristics and strengths. Our mission and our joy of creation is to develop yarns which can draw their uniqueness. Our goal is to create innovative yarns and new values by blending various materials in the world. We all warmly welcome your visit, who enjoy making yarns in a beautiful nature environment of Yamagata, with pure water, clean air and rich green.
